Rebecca Stewart T.Y. French has kindly summarised her term project for the Modern Language Blog.
My project was about the French cookbook "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and the author Julia Child. This book was written by two authors although the second one is not as well known as Julia Child, her name is Simone Beck. I chose this topic after seeing the move "Julie and Julia" and was interested in her story.
Julia Chld was born in America on the 15th of August 1912; she just died a few years ago on the 13th of August 2004. She was an author and a television personality. She wrote one of the first French cook book in English an introdces french cooking to the English speaking world. Her television programme was called "The French Chef" it premiered in 1963.She was a tall woman at six feet, two inches. She played a lot of sport during her school life and through college, in which she got a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She worked as a copy writer in an advertising agency for a few years.
In World War II she found that she was to enlist in the U.S Navy and so made herself useful in other areas of the field. After the war she married Paul Chid on the 1st of September 1946. They had no children. Paul Child had lived in Paris as an artist and poet, and was known for his sophisticated palate. He joined the United States Foreign Serice and introduced Julia to good cooking. They moved to Paris for Paul's job in 1948. In Paris Julia started cooking and became a real food expert. She described her first meal there as a culinary revolution and in the New York Times as "an opening up of the soul and mind for me"
She studied cooking in the famous cooking school "Le Cordon Bleu" and later privately with Max Bugnard and other master chiefs. She joined the "Lady's French Cooking School" and there met Simone Beck and her friend Louisette Bertholletey were writing a English french book together and asked Julia to join so that it would appeal to Americans.Julia, Simone, and Louisette started teaching French cooking out of Julia's kitchen to American women, the called it "L'Ecole des Gourmandes". The three of them started testing recipes and Julia translated them making them detailed, interesting and practical. They initially signed a contract with the publisher Houhton Mifflin, but they then rejected the manuscript for being too much like an encyclopaedia. It was finally printed by Alfred A.Knopf in 1961. "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" was a number one bestseller. The book is still in print today and is considered a seminal culinary work.
The book then led to her television program "The French Chef". The show ran nationally ten years and won Peabody and Emmy awards. She was the most widely seen TV shef as she attracted people with her cheery voice and her enthusiasm and unpatronising and unaffected manner. It also became the first programme to be captioned for the deaf.Julia's second book was "The French Chef Cookbook" which was demonstrated on her show followed by "Mastering the Art of French Cooking: Volume Two" again with Simone but not with Louisette who they had ended theie partnership with then followed by "From Child's Kitchen" It was illustrated by her husband's pictures.
In 1981 she founded the educational American Institute of Wine ad Food in Napa, California with the vintners Robert Mondavi and Richard Graff to "advance the understanding, appreciation and quality of wine and food" a pursuit she had already started wither books and television programmes. In 1989 she published what she considered her magnum opus, a book and instructional video series collectively "The Way to Cook".Julia's kitchen in Cambridge was completely and fully transformed into a fully functional set, with TV lighting equipment and three cameras angled to catch all the corners of the room. and a huge island in the middle of the room this was the set for most of her 1990's shows.
Julia's last book was called "My Life In France". It was an autobiograhical piece written in 2006 by her husbands great nephew, Alex Prud'homme it recounts Julia's Life with her husband Paul in the post world war II France. Her husband died in 1994 after a series of strokes. She then moved to a retirement village and donated her kitchen to the National Museum of American History, where it is now on display.
In 2002 Julie Powell started documenting online her daily experiences cooking each of the 524 resipes in Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooing". Julia later wrote the blog "The Julie/Julia Project" into a memoir, Julie and Julia:365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen, the paperback version was called "Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously". This was then made into a movie in 2009 joining Julie and Julia's life this is called "Julie and Julia".

Dublin, le 2 novembre
Chère correspondante,
Je suis ton nouveau correspondant. J’ai hâte de te connaître et pratiquer mon français! Je trouve que cet échange est une très bonne idée, n’est pas?
Je me présente!
Ton correspondant,
Seive

Miss Stokes’ T.Y. group are embarking on a French ‘e-mail exchange’ this week.
A group e-mail was sent just before half-term, and this was the reply from France !
Le Blanc, October 14th 2009.
Hello T.Y., St. Columba’s !
Here is the class of 3ème SEGPA from Collège les Ménigouttes!
First, thank you very much for your letter. We really enjoyed reading it. We are very glad to have epals and we are looking forward to knowing you a little bit more.
We are in 3ème, which means this is the last year of middle school for us. SEGPA means “Section d’enseignement général et professionel adapté”. We are taught the usual subjects like Maths, French, English, Geography or PE, but we are also taught more specific subjects that we call “workshop” such as Mecanics, Selling and Warehousing and Horticulture.
Moreover, we will have a few work experience this year.
We have been studying English for 4 years. However, speaking or writing English is not easy for us! But we try hard!
There are 9 students in our class: 3 girls and 6 boys. There are 470 students in our school (45 being in SEGPA). Our school is quite modern (built in the 70s). It is located in Le Blanc which is a town in the center of France (60km from Poitiers). Our school is not a boarding school.
Let’s introduce our teachers:
Mrs Schaal teaches us English.
Mrs Lavergne teaches us Maths, Biology, History, Geography, Music and “Social and Working Skills”.
Mrs Grandin teaches us French and Arts.
Mr Desenon teaches us PE.
Mrs Charet teaches us Selling and Warehousing.
Mr Veter teaches us Mecanics and Horticulture.
Our teachers are nice and not too strict.
This is our last year of middle school. In June 2010, we’ll be sitting for the CFG (Certificat de Formation Générale) which is a certificate for Fondamental Education Level.
Now, let’s introduce ourselves:
Girls first!
Kelly is 15. She is friendly and amiable.
Aurélie is 15. She is pretty and hard- working.
Samantha is 14 and a half. She is lively.
The boys now!
Quentin is 14. He is lively.
Victorien is 15. He is very nice.
Benjamin is 15. Sometimes he is shy, but he can be lively too.
Romain is 15. He is calm and quiet.
Romain V is 15. He is very good- looking.
Anthony is 15. He is shy.
That’s all for now.
We are really looking forward to reading your letters,
Write back soon,
The 3ème SEGPA students.
…….This week will see them sending their own e-mails to their ‘correspondant(e)’.
This fortnightly exchange will give both class groups a chance to improve their foreign language skills and give them a real sense of France and Ireland as young people perceive it.
The exposure to the countries in which the ‘target language’ is spoken is culturally-enriching, motivating and fun. T.Y. was made for things like this !
There will be postings of the three best e-mails during the week.
